When you sign in with your Skype name and password for the first time on a computer, your Skype name is stored there. From now on it will show in the login screen in the drop down menu as one of the choices. Therefor everyone using this computer will know that you have logged in from there.
If you want to delete your name from the sign in screen drop down list for the computer you are on – do the following:
- It is recommended to first backup your contacts (sometimes they disappear). After that quit Skype;
- Open any folder or Windows Explorer;
- In the top part of the window in the address bar input %appdata%\skype and press Enter;
- Delete the folder with the same name as your Skype name. Keep in mind that this will delete your chat history and Skype settings for this user on this computer!
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
Now if you open Skype, your name will no longer show as one of the options. If you login with it again it will start to show once more and you will need to go through the steps above one more time.

I tried this step, it says that “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another programme. Close the folder or file and try again”. Please help…
Hi Bob. Please try restarting the computer and closing Skype if it automatically opens. After that try this again. If it does not work please tell me which Skype and which Windows you are using?

Hi. I don’t know but this may work: try searching in Google for “application data folder in a mac” to see how to open the application data folder. And there find the Skype folder.
For sure, you are an angle. You saved me

I love you. You really helped me. Thanks
Thanks a lot bro.. All the stuff on this site are amazing. Loved it!! :) And I just had lots of Skype names because people used my laptop :D. For some people if it doesn’t work, just QUIT Skype. Don’t close QUIT it! :) Because I closed it lol… then after quitting it worked.
I tried all the ways but it didn’t work.
I have windows professional but I don’t know why its not working. Please help me!
@Shafa
Oh… I just now realized the difference between Close and Quit. Oops! In my defense I will say that English is not my native language.
Thank you very much for letting me know. I will have to fix everywhere on the site where I say Close. It should be Quit. I am writing this down to fix it on Monday.
Regards.
@Mevrouw
Hi. Did you QUIT Skype? Or did you close it? I have made a mistake in the article. You have to quit it.
Brilliant – thanks very much
cool thanks. . . :) now I know. . . :)
Hi, I tried to delete the folder with the user name, when I start Skype again, it’s clear, but when I log in with any username, the system creates a new folder automatically and I’m back to the begining of this problem You can’t delete the folders every time you log out…so, what’s the definite solution for this problem in Windows XP? Skype 5.10.0.116
Thanks
@GC
Hi. I do not think that it is possible to do that without making Skype not work anymore. This is the solution everyone use as far as I know. It is useful for a one time thing, when you log in somewhere on a public computer or something like that.
Regards.
HI
How to change username in skype?
THanks
@Cynphanie
Hi. Unfortunately this is not possible. You have to make a whole new Skype account. You can change your display name though. Regards.
This is awesome!!!!! You’re freaking genius buddy! Thanks a lot! :)
@jiffie
Hi. I actually read it somewhere on the Internet, but still thanks for the comment :).
Hi, I’m using Windows Vista, and it says that it can’t find the %appdata%/skype thing. Please help!
@Andrew
Hi. This should work with Vista as well, but I haven’t tested it though. Are sure you are typing this in the address bar and not the search bar? You can also do Start -> Run and type it there and click OK. It should work as well.
Thanks a loooot :). It saved me =P. And this really works.. Thanks man :)
@Murtaza
Hi. You are welcome :P
Can I retrieve my skype calls if not recorded
Thank you
@Angel
Hi. You want to listed to old calls somehow? Well Skype is definitely not recording them :). So unless you have used some software to record them, I don’t see how.
Ok thank you for your information :)
@Angel
No problem :)
