The portable version of a program is the same program but without the need of installation. So Skype Portable 3.8 is the good old Skype 3.8 with the added benefit of not requiring installation in order to run.
Actually it is quite useful in many situations. For example if you want to open Skype on a computer that is not your own and it does not have Skype installed. Then you can just bring this version on a USB flash drive and start it directly from there. You can even carry it around on a MP3 player or a CD.

Yes but this is 3.8. If we are talking about this number, then even the normal version works when I test it. But 3.6 does not.
Does the normal (not portable) 3.8 work for you?
No, the non-portable version of v3.8 does not work with my setup (Win7 Ultimate, x64). If memory serves it never worked after I upgraded to Win7 about 2 or 3 years ago (the program starts alright, but then crashes after a few seconds). That’s why I went with v3.6 at the time.

I am not 100% sure but I think that now it should work if you update your windows. Also do not use compatibility mode and ignore messages about not being compatible.

Wonderful, it works great. I am a win 7 user and skype 3.8 and 3.6 is the best. I don’t like the upgraded version of skype, I had the problems like most users had, that is skype 3.6 and 3.8 not working on windows 7. I have multiple accounts. Please how can I open 2 or more skypes with the skype portable 3.8 or any other method for skype 3.8 or 3.6 to work on windows 7 with no problems?

Hi. The way I know it, 3.6 is not working anymore anywhere. 3.8 should work on win 7 but there are some problems sometimes. Try the suggestions in comment #33 from here: https://en.chat4o.com/skype-3-8/
Also update your windows, since old versions were having troubles with 3.8.
To open portable 3.8 more than once on win 7 you can do the following trick: Install a normal Skype on the computer (we will not use it directly). Go to the install folder and then Phone folder and remove the Skype.exe. Now copy the portable version exe file and put it there. Also rename it to be Skype.exe. Now use the SkypeLauncher as it is described in FAQ number 1 at the end of this post: https://en.chat4o.com/two-skypes/
This will work on win 7 and will trick the launcher to open the portable version many times.
